Currently OpenOffice Writer does not allow glyph scaling for justified text. This makes using justified text for some languages (like Khmer that has no space between words) difficult and the result is poor at best. I want to suggest that OpenOffice integrate the ability to scale glyphs in addition to the current kerning so that languages such as Khmer will look perfect justified. Some examples: http://www.khmeros.info/drupal612/en/node/2687

For a longer discussion on the benifits (not only for Khmer, but every language) see this document: http://www.tex.ac.uk/ctan/macros/latex/contrib/microtype/microtype.pdf

I am not sure if this is possible - but it would be a wonderful addition to OpenOffice.

Current OOo Justification Without Glyph Scaling

I've attached an OpenOffice document showing the current option for Complex Texts just as Khmer (that does not use spaces between words). It is not really useable for publication because it looks so bad.

Preview of Desired Justification Feature that Allows Glyph Scaling

I've attached an PDF document showing the desired option of Glyph scaling (made in Adobe InDesign) for Complex Texts just as Khmer (that does not use spaces between words). It allows the result to look professional for publications (such as books, magazines, and newspapers)

I've attached a PDF document (for those that can't view Khmer) showing the current option for Complex Texts just as Khmer (that does not use spaces between words). It is not really useable for publication because it looks so bad.
