Description cfgardiner 2006-07-23 18:07:44 UTC
Hi,

I am trying to do the following:

Create an indented paragraph style where the first line has a negative
indentation (i.e. 1st line not indented) Furthermore I would like the first word
of the first line printed bold. From the description it seemed to me that I
could do this with drop caps.

I tried marking 'Display Drop Caps' + 'whole word' and chose 'Strong Emphasis'
as character style. The stylist shows 'strong emphasis' as being bold faced.

What I observe is that no matter what character style I chose, the first word
uses the same type face as the rest of the paragraph and is printed on a gray
background. It would further appear, that this gray background is just some form
of internal highlighting (like document variables) since it does not show up
when the document is printed to pdf

Charles

MRU->FME: when a paragraph only consists of one line, the assigned character
style of a drop cap won't be applied to the text. Try out with e.g. character
style "Emphasis" or "Strong Emphasis"; you will only notice a difference, when
the paragraph is at least two lines.

Hi,

I've just tried out what you said about the minimum paragraph size of two lines.
I see what you mean. However, that is not quite what I was trying to do. I would
like to have the first word of the first line bold but otherwise identically
formatted with the rest of the text.

So, I'd like to post a change request as a follow on. Currently, in the
drop-caps tab the 'minimum number of lines' box only accepts values of 2 or
larger. Could this be changed to also accept a setting of 1?

To complete the picture, I am basically doing a list of definitions and would
like the key-word non-indented and bold with the desription (1 or more lines)
indented.

Charles

Hi,
hope I'm not getting on peoples nerves with this issue. I have just onsulted the
Oasis Spec. It is actually specified (Section 15.5.15, Heading 'Lines') that a
value of 0 or 1 in the drop-cap lines attribute means that drop-caps are disabled.

In otherwords, OO/SO is perfectly spec-compliant here. It's probably better to
close this whole issue.

Pity, would have been a useful formatting help instead of having to mark each
first word and then click bold-face.

Charles

It seams to me, that you do not need the feature "drop caps for one-line paragraph" but that you need the feature "run-in headings" as requested in bug 39582. The requested "automatic" formatting would come with the "next style" attribute of a paragraph style.
