Description rabil 2007-02-12 14:25:24 UTC
I've tried running 2.1 on a 32-bit laptop with 1.28gb of memory and a 2gb 64-bit
Athlon system both running Fedora Core 6. In both cases for a large report that
I've been working on for some time, I cannot get a page preview. The process bar
stops at about 1/3 of the way through the document. The document has a lot of
tables and figures but I've been able to get previews and postscript files. The
document is about 4mb but the directory with pics is about 225 mb. To get around
a problem with pics disappearing, I upped the memory in the Tools/Options panel
and I save about 40% of the pics to emf's using Draw and then linked them in
rather than embedding them. I also removed a number of frames and placed some of
the figures into tables to more easily control placement. I can step through the
pages but at this point I'm really stuck since I can't print. I've left OOo run
for more than 5 hours and it never finishes re-paginating. I absolutely must
finish this document soon.
Comment 1 rabil 2007-02-12 14:46:40 UTC
The document has 342 pages. I cut off pages 173-342 and saved to a file. I then
tried a preview and it froze. I loaded the original file and saved from 172-342.
Then I did a preview and it did not freeze. I was able to get a preview. How can
I determine what element is causing the problem?
Comment 2 michael.ruess 2007-02-12 15:09:42 UTC
Crashes/Loops are Priority P2 (see issue guidelines).
Comment 3 rabil 2007-02-12 15:51:01 UTC
I believe I've narrowed the problem to pp. 130-148. At least, cutting these out
from the 1-172 page document previews now (when I cut them out and directly
tried to preview OOo crashed - I recovered and tried the preview again and it
worked).
Comment 4 kpalagin 2007-02-12 18:52:13 UTC
rabil,
can we see part that causes freeze? If it is big you can use www.mytempdir.com
to transfer the file. If the file is confidential you can set pwd at
mytempdir.com and send the link to developers.

I also suggest trying two things - export to .pdf and version 2.2 (beta is
available currently, release candidate this or next week).
Comment 5 rabil 2007-02-12 20:25:08 UTC
Export to pdf seems to fail for the same reason (during re-pagination). I can
try to upload to www.mytempdir.com. The file is 3 or 4 mb but there are a lot of
links to pics. Should I upload all the linked files? Also, I will try 2.2 as
soon as possible.
Comment 6 rabil 2007-02-12 20:43:47 UTC
What e-mail address should I send the link? issues@sw? I will upload without the
missing pics. I don't think the missing pics affect the freeze.
Comment 7 kpalagin 2007-02-12 21:09:53 UTC
I think you should send the link to mru@openoffice (safety first - find
nick "mru" at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/DomainDeveloper#QA_Engineers to
confirm identity).

Before you do that, make sure that you yourself can repro the problem without
pics.
Comment 8 michael.ruess 2007-02-13 13:57:34 UTC
MRU->OD: on your "first-glance-debugging" it looked that "table 108" causes the
problem.
Document is confidential, so please keep it like this.
Comment 9 rabil 2007-02-13 14:47:47 UTC
Table 108 has just 2 rows and 1 column. Each cell has pic and caption. I will
try to investigate further.

I was able to create a master document from the original file. Doing this
automatically caused each section/chapter to be put in its own document. I can
open each subdocument and I can preview them except for section 2 which is where
Table 108 is located. As before, OOo will often freeze if I move things around
in section 2 or try to preview. So at least this way I've isolated the problem
to one smaller document. I'm not sure what the best approach would be to try to
fix this document. Table 108 is something I added to try to fix this problem. I
placed pics into tables to try to prevent frames from obscuring each other
(after moving around uncontrollably). I will try to remove Table 108 and see
what happens. If this doesn't help, would it make sense to remove all the frames
to see what happens?
Comment 10 rabil 2007-02-14 15:40:35 UTC
I've been working on Section 2 from making a master document from the original
document. (This split up the big doc into a lot of pieces. I could preview each
part and make pdfs of each part except Section 2.) I went in and changed each
frame to "to character", no protection, no wrap, flow with text, and no
protection on the pics in the frames. I took any table that was in a frame out
of the frame and removed the frame. Some pics w/captions I moved into single
cell tables (where there are a lot of figures bunched together). After doing all
this, when I would preview Section 2, OOo would still freeze. But after killing
OOo, I would recover the doc and THEN preview and export to pdf would work. It
seems any time I change the file, preview freezes and I have to kill OOo and
then recover and then I can preview and export to pdf. So there is still
something screwed up in the doc. I can send this doc (but some of the pics are
embedded but I don't think this affects what's going on).
Comment 11 rabil 2007-02-15 05:42:25 UTC
I've been trying to adjust the tables in the subdocument (section 2) that has
something strange about it. I was able to re-paginate and do a pdf export. On my
laptop runnin FC6 and OOo 2.1 (from the OOo rpms), OOo freezes every few minutes
whenever I adjust a frame size or table size.

What would be the best way to REBUILD Section 2? The other parts of the master
document don't exhibit any of these problems. Wouldn't it be easier to try to
rebuild the doc? I just want to do it with the least amount of manual effort. Do
you have any suggestions?
Comment 12 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2007-02-15 06:52:50 UTC
OD->rabil:
Send me the sub document, which causes the trouble. I will analyze it and try to
"repair" it.
Comment 13 rabil 2007-02-15 13:10:50 UTC
I will post the .odt file for Section 2 and send you a link.
Comment 14 rabil 2007-02-15 16:55:46 UTC
www.mytempdir.com has been down all morning. I could e-mail you the file it's
only about 760kb. Some pictures are linked but I don't think they are causing
the problem. To whose e-mail address should I send the file?

As I said, when I have this doc open in OOo 2.1 on my 32-bit FC6 laptop, it
freezes within 60 seconds constantly. I have to constantly try to save what
little I can do before OOo freezes and then kill OOo and start it again - only
with this file (I use it all the time on countless other files without any
problems whatsoever).

I copied this doc (and all linked files) to another FC4 (64-bit) and OOo 2.1
(from OOo website rpms). I'm able to work with the doc, change things, save,
preview, export to pdf, etc. without OOo freezing. (Originally I was not able to
preview this doc on this machine but after trying to "clean" the doc, it seems
to work better on this computer.)
Comment 15 rabil 2007-02-15 17:01:04 UTC
Note that the doc still causes the FC4 64-bit computer running OOo 2.1 to freeze
but not quite as often.
Comment 16 rabil 2007-02-16 05:32:02 UTC
OK, I've taken the section 2 odt and broken it into 12 parts by quickly copying
and pasting parts into separate documents. I had to work quickly because OOo 2.1
would freeze within 30-60 seconds every time I opened section 2 (I had to copy
and quickly close section 2 and then paste into the new file). Only one of the
new files seemed to have problems and I tried to fix it. All the other files
exhibited no problems and I could easily preview them. I'm going to check all
the files and then try to join them together again.

I can still send section 2 but I need to know what e-mail address to send to.
I'll also check www.mytempdir.com to see if the site is working again.

I think you need to send your doc to od -at-openoffice.org.
Put issue number in subject line.
Comment 18 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2007-02-16 07:26:12 UTC
OD->rabil:
my email address is od@openoffice.org. You will find a link above each of my
